I wrote Problem Statement and formulation of - Channel Quality Adaptive bandwidth-efficient delivery of the scalable videos for VoD service over LTE Networks. The objective is to maximize video quality. Next week I shall write an extended formulation with cooperative/ advanced buffering feature and the heuristic algorithm.

Topic: OFDMA resource allocation

I checked the OPNET code for power management, channel model and path loss calculation in LTE. I discussed my finding with Masum. I also discussed the possible approaches for inter-cell interference mitigation in LTE network, based on last week literature review. We have decided that during sub-carrier selection, we will compare average CQI and subband CQI for each user, which will help us to overcome ICIC. I also have done literature review on few recent works.

Topic: Video-on-demand

I have reviewed Saleh’s report and sent him back the document with my comments. We have met to discuss how to write the problem statement and improve the problem formulation. We also have discussed about the user behavior model and profit for segments.

Reviewing: 1) Data rate variation with channel condition and power allocation. 2) Literature on power and resource block allocation for LTE.

In last 4 months, I have worked on the paper "Power Efficient Multicast-Unicast Video-on-Demand Streaming Algorithms over LTE Networks". I contributed in OPNET simulation of the algorithm. I also worked on two algorithms for resource allocation in heterogeneous wireless networks. I prepared a Ericsson grant application for this proposal.

I am working on user association algorithm for LTE advanced Hetnet.

April 13

This week I have implemented periodic broadcast in OPNET and worked on the ACM Multimedia paper.

Masum has discussed three research areas in the field of resource allocation in Hetnet: 1) Cost-efficient deployment of micro-cell/ pico-cell/ femto-cell and relays for LTE-Advanced system. 2) Dynamic user association to different layer cells within a macro-cell area. 3) Dynamic channel allocation (inter-cell interference management) to different layer cells within a macro-cell. He is preparing a literature review.

April 1

Generated the simulation results in OPNET and included the results in "ACM Multimedia" paper. Masum's Progress: Discussed the possible research areas in LTE advanced- Hetnet radio resource allocation. Now Masum is investigating - Dynamic and cost effective resource allocation between different layers of cell (maco, micro, relay) in Hetnet.

I have used video trace files in LTE multicasting scenarios and generated results for multicast throughput, MBMS bearer delay, packet drop etc. The results are explainable. I have tested the scenarios for different MBMS bearer rates. I have found that the maximum MBMS bearer support is 384kpbs. I also have read few documents to understand MBMS standard and scheduling in LTE. Now I am going through the process models in LTE and hope to start modifying soon.

Saleh's progress: We have discussed about his algorithm. He is going to propose a hybrid multicasting algorithm that is the combination of time shifting and patching approach. It will identify the video segments (not the whole video) as popular and non-popular, based on the number of requests. The idea is that most people may not watch the whole video but only the highlights. Scheduling Algorithm: 1) Time shift: Put only the popular segments of a video in MBMS window. (General time shift approach puts the whole video on the channel). 2) Patching: Non popular segments either in multicast/ unicast. (General patching approach- if the number of request for a video is very high, it will be similar to time shift).

Masum's progress: Masum has done a quick review of about 15 papers on LTE- HETNET. He has identified few major areas in the field: interference management- inter-cell interfernce between different tiers and intra-cell interference, coordinated MIMO, cost effective deployment of relay. For interference management, two approaches are identified- frequency reuse and power management. Now we have decided to do in depth literature review on "inter-cell interference management between different tiers" and "cost effective deployment of micro-cell/pico-cell/relay".

This week I spent most of my time on OPNET simulation. I have modified a Multicasting scenario in LTE for two different traffic models, one standard heavy FTP and the other using OPNET traffic center. The simulation results show that UEs receive the multicast traffic. But some results for both the given OPNET example and my scenario are not clear to me. I shall start looking into the node and process models from next week. Next week I shall apply the real video trace file, given in NSL website.

This week I have discussed with Saleh about the progress in proposing an algorithm. We have discussed an algorithm that can be dynamically adaptive between patching and time shifted periodic broadcast depending on the number of users requested (or will request; statistical prediction) a video stream. He is working to put the new ideas in paper. He has also mentioned me that bursty transmission in MBMS for power conservation is already in the standard. So his main emphasis will be on scheduling algorithm.

Masum is doing his literature review. He has sent me a review report on 5 papers. I have identified one paper among them and suggest him for a closer look.

Last week I have spent my time on: 1) OPNET recap. 2) Understand the LTE configuration in OPNET. 3) Studied the example scenarios of LTE given in OPNET.

This week I am working on developing a Broadcast scenario and transmit the stream in burst. I shall compare that result with unicast streaming.

Last week I have discussed with Saleh about the algorithm and shared a numerical example with him. In the numerical example, we talked about the number of LTE frames in a scheduling window and associated delay, number of sub-frames/ frame for MBMS and associated capacity etc. He has told me that he will give a draft of algorithm incorporating our discussion tomorrow.

Last week I have given Masum an overview and evolution of wireless technologies. I have forwarded LTE market survey and three LTE documents. Today we met and discuss his understanding about basic cell planning. This week I have told him to select good journal and conference papers on frequency allocation in 4G, frequency reuse in 4G and heterogeneous network in 4G. I have mentioned the quick review approach for the papers: read the abstract, introduction and conclusion of the papers and identify problem statement and solution approach. He will do this quick review for a number of papers (may be 10) and send me his own comments on the paper. After that my plan is to select few papers that are interesting for us and read in detail.
